Pair Thonet Bentwood Angel Chairs - Design No. 19

Chair Design No.19: Thonet started manufacturing the angel back chair in 1878 and discontinued the design sometime around 1921-1922.

Label: According to the book "Die Thonet Brand - A Look at Its Graphic Design History" the label that is found on these chairs was in use between 1922 and 1988.

Factory: Thonet established a factory at Bistritz in 1861. This factory ceased producing feature in the early 1940's and manufactured aeroplane parts. Post war the factory was nationalised and became part of the TON brand.

Seat: The seat is unusual in that most No.19 chairs appear to have cane seats. Catalogues from the 1930's show the seat as design 202.

Thonet is a furniture manufacturer renowned for its pioneering use of bentwood and tubular steel in furniture design. Founded by Michael Thonet in the 19th century, the company is known for its iconic designs, including the No. 14 chair (also known as the coffee house chair), and for its early adoption of mass production techniques.
