Early 20th‑century cast‑iron doorstop of Bob Cratchit & Tiny Tim from Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
Early 20th‑century cast‑iron doorstop of Bob Cratchit & Tiny Tim from Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
A substantial Dickensian door porter cast in England c. 1920–30s, depicting Bob Cratchit carrying Tiny Tim. Sand‑cast iron with hand-applied cold paint; the reverse bears a “MADE IN ENGLAND” plaque and pattern number 5006. Attributed to John Harper & Co., noted for their Dickens series. Later glossy repaint with minor wear; light oxidation to the reverse. A charming and functional piece of interwar domestic design with Christmas appeal. Height 39 cm; heavy and stable. Ready to display.
Provenance and Age
The "MADE IN ENGLAND" stamp confirms British manufacture. The casting style is consistent with West Midlands foundries (like Chamberlain & Hill or similar competitors) that operated heavily between the 1920s and the 1950s.
The "McCawber" Anomaly
The piece is stamped McCawber on the back, this discrepancy is a well-known curiosity in the world of cast iron doorstops and indicates a foundry error. The British foundries mass-producing these in the early-to-mid 20th century likely confused their Dickens characters or reused a mold base intended for a Micawber figure. This mislabeling adds a layer of charm and conversation to the piece, proving it is an older casting rather than a modern reproduction (which usually correct such errors or have no markings).
Condition: Structurally sound with honest casting wear to the reverse; light surface oxidation on the back. The front and base show a later high‑gloss repaint over earlier surfaces; scattered touch‑ups and chips to edges. Original cold paint is likely largely covered.
Origin: British
Time Period: 1920–30s
Historical Context
Historical Context
Between the wars there was a strong “Dickens Revival” in theatre and publishing; British foundries issued popular characters—Pickwick, Micawber, Cratchit & Tiny Tim, etc.—as decorative yet functional doorstops. Pieces were cast in sand moulds and cold-painted by hand in multiple colours.
