Historical Context
Historical Context
Avalokiteshvara is the Bodhisattva of Compassion central to Tibetan Buddhism (Chenrezig in Tibetan). Multi‑armed, multi‑headed forms became common in Himalayan art from the 15th century onward. Kathmandu Valley artisans have supplied the Tibetan world with gilt bronzes for centuries; after the 1960s many such figures were produced for monasteries, pilgrims and the tourist/export trade.
Nepal (Kathmandu Valley workshops), Tibetan style, mid–late 20th century (circa 1970–1990). Open, unsealed base and the glass cabochon inlay point to a later, workshop piece made for shrine or export rather than an older temple bronze.
