A striking emerald‑green blown glass pedestal vase, lavishly decorated in hand‑applied matt and burnished gilding with diamond cartouches and trailing foliate arabesques in the fashionable “Oriental” taste of late‑Victorian Bohemia. The form and decoration are characteristic of the luxury glass made in northern Bohemia for export in the 1880–1900 period.

  • Dimensions: H 32 cm; maximum diameter approx. 14–15 cm.
  • Provenance: Private UK collection. Style and fabrication place it confidently in late 19th‑century Bohemia.

A superb statement piece for mantel, console or cabinet and a fine example of Austro‑Hungarian decorative glass.

Condition: Good antique order with expected rubbing and small losses to the gilding, most visible to the rim and foot; no cracks or repairs seen. Presents beautifully.

Historical Context

During the late 19th century, Bohemian glassmakers were the world leaders in decorative glass. This period was defined by "Historicism"—a revival of past styles (Renaissance, Baroque, and Gothic) applied to modern manufacturing. The rich emerald green color was achieved using chromium or copper oxide and was extremely fashionable during the Victorian era.
