Vintage Michel Caugant Faïence Pheasant Terrine – French Hand‑Painted Lidded Dish, c.1970s
Vintage Michel Caugant Faïence Pheasant Terrine – French Hand‑Painted Lidded Dish, c.1970s
Hand‑made in Brittany for French charcutier Michel Caugant, this charming faïence terrine takes the form of a richly coloured pheasant.
Produced in the 1970s–80s, Caugant’s animal terrines were originally sold filled with pâté and are now highly collectible examples of French country pottery.
The lidded dish is beautifully modelled, with detailed feathering and glossy hand‑painted glazes in russet, green and black. The underside bears the printed Caugant signature and French inscription confirming that the piece was entirely hand‑made in genuine faïence.
Perfect for display in a farmhouse kitchen, on a dresser or hunting‑lodge sideboard, and equally lovely used to serve pâté, nuts or small treats.

Historical Context
Historical Context
Michel Caugant (1924–2007) was a charcutier in Brittany, France. From the 1960s onward he commissioned hand‑made faïence terrines from Breton potteries (notably in the Quimper / Pornic region) to package his pâtés and rillettes.
The empty animal‑shaped pots were meant to be kept and reused at table, and they quickly became collectible. Designs include ducks, geese, boars, rabbits, fish and game birds; the pheasant form is one of the more decorative models.
