Charming four‑piece Price Kensington “Cottage Ware” tea service, modelled as a group of thatched English cottages and finished in rich hand‑painted glazes.

The set comprises a cottage‑form teapot with branch handle and spout, a square lidded sugar bowl, a rectangular lidded butter or cheese dish and a matching milk jug. Each piece is decorated with brickwork walls, paned windows and climbing foliage under a glossy glaze in warm browns, creams and greens.

All pieces carry the green laurel‑wreath backstamp: “PRICE KENSINGTON – MADE IN ENGLAND – COTTAGE WARE – Reg. No. 845007”, placing the design to the late 1930s and production into the mid‑20th century.

A classic example of mid‑century Staffordshire novelty pottery, perfect for a cottage kitchen, period interior, or as a gift for a teapot collector.

Condition: No obvious cracks or significant chips. All lids present and sitting well. Typical all‑over age crazing to the glaze. Light rubbing to high points of the thatched roofs and handles. Some interior tea staining, mainly to the teapot.

Historical Context

Cottage Ware emerged in the 1930s, when there was a strong nostalgia in Britain for rural life and “chocolate‑box” thatched cottages. Price Kensington became one of the biggest producers, exporting huge numbers of these novelty yet usable teapots and tablewares worldwide.

This four‑piece service – teapot, lidded butter dish, lidded sugar bowl and milk jug – represents a typical inter‑war / early post‑war English tea table: affordable, cheerful pottery intended to brighten everyday tea times.
