A vibrant hand‑painted Dutch Delft lidded jar, pattern no. 819, dating from around the 1960s–1980s.Ā

This low, wide jar is richly decorated in traditional Delft polychrome: scrolling cobalt blue foliage filled with bold red, yellow and blue flowers, repeated across the body and domed lid. The strong colours and rhythmic floral design make it a striking accent piece for a dresser, sideboard or open shelving.

To the base it is marked with the design number 819 above a small urn device and ā€œDelft – Made in Hollandā€, typical of mid‑20th‑century Delftware workshops continuing the centuries‑old Delft tradition for the export and collector market.

Historical Context

Delftware began in the 17th century in Delft, when Dutch potters imitated fashionable Chinese porcelain using tin‑glazed earthenware.

By the 18th century, potters introduced polychrome decoration, adding iron red, yellow and green to the traditional cobalt blue.

After most original factories closed in the 19th century, a few firms (Royal Delft / De Porceleyne Fles, Zenith, Goedewaagen, etc.) kept the tradition alive.

This jar belongs to the mid‑20th‑century revival period, when Dutch potteries produced bright, decorative Delftware for tourists and export while reworking historic floral patterns.
