Set of 18th-Century Carved Oak Herm Mounts and Corbels
Seven superb hand-carved oak mounts comprising five figural ‘herm’ pilasters and a pair of foliate corbels. Richly detailed with egg-and-dart capitals, drapery, strapwork and scrolling leaves. Northern European work, late 18th century, likely French/Breton or Flemish. Originally part of a grand armoire or cupboard, now perfect for re-use on cabinetry, a headboard, a doorway, or as wall art.
Each shows bold hand carving with deep relief and retains a rich, old wax surface.

Condition: Good antique condition with age-related wear, small chips and old nail holes; stable surface; traces of old finish and wax.

Figural “herms” and atlantes were popular decorative supports on Northern European furniture and interiors from the 16th–18th centuries and were revived locally into the 19th century. Oak was the standard timber for such work because of its durability and crispness under the chisel.
