Historical Context
Historical Context
John Beswick Ltd. of Longton, Staffordshire, began in 1892 and by the 1930s was specialising in realistic animal figures. Farm animals like cows, horses and pigs were produced for the growing middle‑class home‑decor market and exported widely throughout the Commonwealth and the USA.
This sow and piglet belong to this mid‑20th‑century phase, before Beswick was taken over by Royal Doulton in 1969. The cream glaze with grey airbrushed shading and cartoonish eyelashes is typical of Beswick’s pre‑ and immediate post‑war designs.
