Vintage Indian Patinated Bronze Stallion, 38cm – Hand‑Cast Equestrian Sculpture
Vintage Indian Patinated Bronze Stallion, 38cm – Hand‑Cast Equestrian Sculpture
A striking vintage Indian bronze study of a richly caparisoned stallion, dating to the early–mid 20th century. Cast by the lost‑wax method in a brass/bronze alloy, the horse stands alert with finely modelled head and flowing tail, wearing an ornate saddlecloth and bridal picked out in low relief.
The dark hand‑applied patina has mellowed beautifully with age, with gentle rubbing on the high points that highlights the underlying metal and adds depth to the modelling. This type of equestrian figure draws on a long Indian tradition of bronzes made for royal courts and domestic shrines, celebrating the status and power of the horse in Rajput and Mughal culture.
A substantial decorative piece with real presence – perfect for an equestrian collection, an eclectic mantelpiece, or as a focal point on a console table.
- Material: Cast bronze / brass alloy with dark patina
- Dimensions: Approx. 38cm long x 25cm high
Condition: Overall sound, no obvious breaks or structural repairs. Even dark brown/black patina with some rubbing to high points. Small scattered scuffs and patina losses (lighter metal showing), especially on one hind leg. Underside of hooves show wear and remnants of old adhesive or pads. Minor casting imperfections typical of hand‑cast work.
Origin: India, probably Rajasthan / North India
Time Period: Early–mid 20th century (c. 1930–1960)
Historical Context
Historical Context
The richly decorated saddlecloth and harness, with repeating punched and cast motifs, follow North‑Indian / Rajput court style. Such horses were made for both temple and domestic shrines, and—by the 20th century—for export and the growing tourist market. They reference India’s long tradition of bronze equestrian figures, from Chola temple bronzes in the south to princely portrait horses in Rajasthan.
