Impressive Chinese porcelain charger decorated in vibrant wucai / famille verte enamels, featuring a writhing green dragon and colourful phoenix amongst scrolling peony. The classic pairing of dragon and phoenix symbolises the Emperor and Empress, harmony and prosperity, while peonies represent wealth and honour.

The broad rim is moulded with gentle lobes and painted with alternating floral panels on a rich cobalt‑blue ground, framed by a foliate scroll border. The reverse bears three peony sprays and a neatly written six‑character Da Qing Kangxi Nian Zhi reign mark within double concentric circles.

  • Chinese porcelain, Jingdezhen, 20th century
  • Decorated in the style of Kangxi (1662–1722) wucai wares
  • Six‑character Kangxi mark to base (apocryphal)
  • Diameter: approx. 45 cm
  • Suitable for wall hanging or display on a stand

A striking statement piece for an oriental‑inspired interior, and a fine addition to any collection of Chinese porcelain.

Condition: Excellent vintage condition. No cracks, repairs or significant chips observed; only very light wear consistent with age and careful display. Please see photographs for detail.

Origin: China

Time Period: 20th Century (1911-)

Historical Context

Wucai (“five colours”) was perfected in the Ming dynasty and remained popular into the Qing. Under the Kangxi Emperor (1662–1722) the palette evolved into what Western collectors call famille verte; translucent emerald greens with iron‑red and yellow enamels over an underglaze‑blue outline.

The dragon represents the Emperor; the phoenix (fenghuang) the Empress. Together they symbolise marital harmony, balance of yin and yang, and auspicious imperial authority. Peonies denote wealth and honour.

The charger carries a Kangxi six‑character mark, but the porcelain body, very white glaze, style of enamels and the calligraphy of the mark strongly suggest it is not Kangxi but a later homage piece. Using earlier imperial reign marks (apocryphal marks) on later wares was, and still is, a common and accepted practice.
